3D Lifting Devices for Mechanical Handling Studies

Mechanical Handling Studies

When engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies design a new plant, they build a 3D Navisworks model to evaluate the facility. A critical part of this process is the mechanical handling study, where maintenance engineers analyze how equipment can be serviced and maintained.

To conduct an effective mechanical handling study, the 3D model needs to include accurate representations of the actual cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices that will be used on-site. However, finding or creating high-quality 3D models of this equipment can be time-consuming and difficult.

3D Lifting Devices for Mechanical Handling Studies

As a team experienced in mechanical handling studies for the Oil&Gas industry, we've met the problem of correclty demonstrating the devices on the 3D model for animation, clash detection or simple screenshotting or rendering purposes. As everyone else, we've been struggling with the available 3D models, that principally were made either for nice rendering or 3D printing purposes, and wasted a lot of time trying to use them for our purposes.

Mostly they were out of scale, made from elements that were problematic to move around, boom dimensions inaccurate... a real pain to work with, and the even the output.. diverse models did have a different feel and look.

After a few unsuccesful trials we've decided to model our own devices and created a collection of 3D models for cranes, forklifts, hoists, and many other lifting equipment.

These models are designed to provide accurate dimensions and realistic representations that can be seamlessly integrated into Navisworks 3D plant models.
